The Great Undoing...
I sat with a friend the other day, drinking coffee in a foreign city. We talked about the questions our children are asking. How such tiny people can ask such cosmic questions about life, death, dinosaurs, space and God. We talked about our limited knowledge and our imperfect love. Difficult question do not deserve simple answers.
We talked about artificial intelligence and how they’ll live to see the great undoing of this so called ‘knowledge’ in their generation.
My friend has already begun the great undoing. Moving away from instant knowledge and towards eternal mystery. Where once his life was led by the guidance of technology, he’s learning to listen to the vulnerability of human conversations and the nuance of human culture. He tells me it’s like learning a foreign language that should’ve always been his native tongue. The first thing he has noticed is that at night he is dreaming again. I’m speechless at this. The undoing begins on the periphery of his subconscious and he is dreaming in the dark. As he untangles the knotted wire of the machine - I can’t help but wonder what he’ll begin to dream of in the light of day? Where his imagination might roam. What internal landscapes of the soul he will discover along the way. What questions he will ask and what flow will move through him like streams of living water to the city he inhabits.
The great undoing of artificial intelligence is a move towards artistic imagination. I’m joining my friend. How about you?
I’m writing more and more these days on creativity as the normal expression of our humanity. It’s under the working title: “Artistic Imagination; reflections for the creatively curious in an age of Artificial Intelligence.” Thanks for reading, please subscribe to follow the journey and for more content on Artistic Imagination.
